Il Circolo Filippo Mazzei, Godfather of the Declaration of Independence
Joseph Barbera - The Jetsons, Tom & Jerry, The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry
Hound, and dozens of other characters created by the imaginative minds of cartoonists Joseph
Barbera (an Italian-American) and William Hanna (Scottish-American) have entertained people
around the world for generations. Barbera had been working as an accountant for a New York
bank when Collier's magazine bought a cartoon he had created. Inspired by that small success,
he gave up accounting and embarked on a career as a cartoonist. After joining MGM, he met
Hanna and the two collaborated on dozens of animated shorts and even a number of full-length
films. Together Hanna and Barbera received seven Oscars in the 10-year period that ended in
1953. The names Hanna and Barbera were joined for good when the pair formed Hanna-Barbera
Productions in 1957. In the ensuing years, they continued to produce volumes of work still
seen on Saturday mornings everywhere.
